Work-life balance is not an elusive unicorn
Q: How do you define being “balanced” in your work and your life?
I have this weird sense of balance.
Not the kind of balance that means I could walk a tightrope or stand on one foot in a Survivor immunity challenge.
It’s when I look at something.
I can tell if it’s balanced or straight or not centered correctly.
That part isn’t so weird.
The fact that I can see the balance or unbalance.
The weird part is that I can feel it.
My body actually reacts when something isn’t balanced correctly.
I feel a tension in my chest and I “just know.”
We’ve been working on our new business branding and this superpower has come up over and over.
McKenna and I will be going through social media posts or website pages and I’ll say, “That’s not centered,” or “Can you shift that text up a couple of clicks?”
She’ll do it and respond, “Oh yep. That’s better.”
And the feeling in my body changes.
It releases the tightness.
It breathes a sigh of relief.
It knows.
My body knows that what I’m looking at is balanced.
I ordered a really big personalized canvas with a phrase printed on it.
It’s something I believe and say all of the time.
I wanted it for the entryway in our home.
I was really excited the day it arrived on my doorstep.
I carefully lifted it from the box and leaned it up against the wall so I could hang it.
And after one look at it I knew.
The text was off-centered.
No! I didn’t want it to be true!
My shoulders dropped and I put my head back as I closed my eyes.
I literally groaned out loud.
It would be such a hassle to return it.
But I couldn’t un-know it.
My body knew and so my mind knew that it wasn’t balanced.
And it felt like such a bummer.
I grabbed my ruler to measure the distance from the edge of the letters on one line to the edge of the canvas.
Hoping that I wasn’t seeing it correctly.
Hoping it was centered properly.
But I was right.
Off by one-quarter of an inch.
The text was all shifted to the right just a little bit - but not enough to look like it was supposed to be shifted (because deliberate shifting is a form of balance, also).
When I emailed the company, I didn’t want to do it.
I wanted it to be correct.
I wanted to be able to just live with it and love it like it was.
I wanted it to be ok.
But it wasn’t.
They had me take pictures of it with a ruler because to them, it looked fine.
They wanted it to be good like it was, too.
It would cost them resources to make it right.
But it wasn’t right.
And they were great to work with as they viewed the photos and swapped my canvas out for a new one.
This is why my clients hire me.
They want balance, too.
They want to change something that doesn’t feel quite right but they’re not sure how to do it.
Something feels off but they don’t see a way to create exactly what they actually want.
They want more but they’re not sure how to get it.
More connection in their relationships.
More ability to be present with their family while they are wildly successful at work.
More intentional action instead of just putting out fires.
More feeling calm and grounded instead of being pulled in different directions.
I’m the master of seeing when something isn’t quite what you want it to be and helping you create the balance you’re reaching for.
Then I teach my clients how to feel that unbalance for themselves and figure out what to do about it.
I have an extremely strong internal sense of balance.
And I can teach you how to have that, too.
Maybe this new skill will help you see if a picture on your wall is crooked or off-centered.
But probably not.
I teach you something better than being a human level tool.
I teach you how to feel if your life is off and then what to do to tip it into place.
Using my Decision Formula, you’ll create exactly what you want to have happen in your life and your business.
You’ll be able to do it all with ease.
With calm.
With confidence.
With determination.
With groundedness.
With intention.
With joy.
Today is the day when you say, “No more.”
“I’m not living like this any more.
I’m stressed and pressured.
But I’m not doing it this way any more.
There has to be a better way.”
I look forward to working with you.
Sending love,
K
