Where's your gap?

Q: Where’s the gap for you?

 

We all have them in our business and in our lives.

A gap between what we really want and what we actually have.

 

Where’s your gap?

 

This gap often shows up in our most fleeting commodity: TIME

Except instead of having gaps in our time – there are no gaps at all.

There is no space on our calendar.

There is no room to take a spontaneous trip to the ice cream store with your kids.

There is no time to just sit and pet the dog.

There is no time to pay attention to your thriving business AND your family.

 

You love your business and you love your family.

But there’s a gap between how you WANT to spend your time and how you HAVE to spend your time.

 

I see this with my human interactions every day.

Recently, John said, “I need to have you help me! I can’t manage my time and I feel burned out!”

He had a coach who told him to wake up at 6 am every day and then start carrying out all of the time-blocked tasks he had scheduled for the day.

 

But John hates waking up at 6 am.

He never even really tried the time management system.

Because it had nothing to do with what he actually wanted to have happen in his day, his week, or even the 6:00 hour.

There was no alignment of his calendar and how he wanted to run his business or his life.

It was simply a list of appointments and obligations.

 

I said, “John, you don’t need a time management system. But you do need to ask yourself a couple of really valuable questions.”

 

Here are those questions:

  1. What do I want to have happen today (or tomorrow or this week or this month or with this conversation coming up...)?

  2. What is the best way to make that happen?

 

This is how we close the gap between how we WANT to spend our time and how we ACTUALLY spend our time.

 

When these two questions drive our scheduling, we end up creating more time.

Our focus becomes so much more than just managing our calendar efficiently.

 

We learn to manage our mind around our schedule.

We learn to manage how we are thinking about everything we put into our schedule.

 

We look at each task or appointment or meeting with a critical eye by asking these questions:

 

What do I want to have happen here?

Is this the best way to make it happen?

Is there another way that I haven’t considered?

How might I do this a different way and still get the result I want?

 

And you fill the gap.

The gap between what you really WANT and what you’re currently creating.

 

It’s more possible than it might feel right now.

You’re welcome to try it with something you are adding to your calendar.

  1. Ask yourself the previous questions.

  2. Stay open-minded to seeing the task/event in a new way.

  3. Then decide if that thing is going on the calendar or not.

 

What do I want to have happen?

What is the best way to make that happen?

 

There are more answers to these questions than you might think.

A million answers.

You really don’t have to do it the way you think you have to.
