Coleman was the top cookie dough salesman at his school in second grade.

We helped him plan his pitch.
Taught him how to look a person in the eye and speak clearly.
Helped him make a clipboard for the order form. A money pouch and neighborhood map attached to the back.
We went to each house and waited at the sidewalk while he knocked on the door.

But his sales instincts took over from there.
He gave suggestions of products that they might enjoy.
He pointed out popular choices.
He was charming and waited patiently as they browsed the catalog.

He sold over $1300 worth of cookie dough that year. 👊🏻

For the last five summers, he’s honed his skills by selling golf balls and Gatorade on the golf course. He calls it his Golf Stop.

He takes cash or Venmo. 👊🏻

Since we live on the course, I told him that if he earned $1000 then we would get a golf cart.
I would cover the rest of the cost.
Quoting the great Alison Prince, I said,

“The money is out there, you just have to go get it.”

Many days this summer he asked me to help haul his cooler and a bucket of balls to a selling spot at 8 am.
Golf balls are in used condition. Found by various family members and neighbors and donated to his cause.
Four for $1 unless their ProVs. Then you have to pay a premium of $1 each.
Some people drive right by him.
Some give exact change.
Some drop him a tip.
It’s all part of his hustle.

And now he is learning to sell stuff in the classifieds on KSL.com.
Because having multiple streams of income is a good idea.
And his dollar/hour rate goes up that way.

He earned his thousand bucks.
He laid it out on the desk at the shop where we bought the golf cart. Cash.

Now he gets his morning chores done early so he can take a quick drive before school.
He takes his friends for rides.
He drives through the neighborhood proudly waving to those passing by.
He’s careful to plug it in each night to recharge the battery.
And he’s going as an Uber driver for Halloween.

Alison Prince was right.
The money is out there.
And so is the dream.
